The developmental course of the link between weight concerns and cigarette use across adolescence: Differences by gender
International Journal of Eating Disorders Jul 31, 2021
Hochgraf AK, Lanza ST, Fosco GM, et al. - Via this study, researchers investigated developmental changes in the link between weight concerns and cigarette use across adolescence and examined the course by gender. Among participants (n = 397; aged 11–18 years), they identified a positive correlation between weight concerns and cigarette use. This association was noted to be significant for girls from age 11.3 to 15.9, with the strongest association at 12.7 years in time-varying effect modeling; this was observed even after adjusting for BMI. This association was non-significant for boys throughout adolescence. These findings may have implications for the developmental timing of interventions to avert cigarette use and weight concerns.
