The current state of teleradiology across the United States: A national survey of radiologists’ habits, attitudes, and perceptions on teleradiology practice
Journal of the American College of Radiology Jul 05, 2019
Rosenkrantz AB, et al. - Through a national survey that approached 936 radiologists’ habits, attitudes, and perceptions regarding teleradiology, the experts intended to investigate the current state of teleradiology practice, defined as the interpretation of imaging examinations at a different facility from where the examination was conducted. Out of 731 respondents who showed a non-teleradiologist primary work setting, 76.9% to 86.2% recognized value from teleradiology for geographic, after-hours, and multispecialty coverage, as well as decreased interpretation turnaround times. Electronic health record access, quality assurance, and technologist proximity were the most common difficulties for teleradiology. For enhancing teleradiology, technical interpretation standards was the most commonly acknowledged useful procedure. However, smaller practice radiologists were less likely observed to do teleradiology or performed teleradiology for lower fractions of work. Also, they were less likely to encounter coverage benefits of teleradiology and detailed larger implementation challenges, especially correlating to electronic health records and prior examination access. Hence, teleradiology was observed as widespread throughout modern radiology practice, assisting practices to attain geographic, after-hours, and multispecialty coverage; decreasing turnaround times; and extending underserved access, regardless of the historic concerns. However, quality insurance of offsite examinations continued to be important, nevertheless. Also, to accomplish teleradiology’s benefits, IT integration solutions could assist smaller practices.
