The course of asthma: A population‐based 10‐year study examining asthma remission in children diagnosed with asthma in preschool
Pediatric Pulmonology Jun 05, 2020
Oluwole O, Rennie DC, Goodridge D, et al. - In this retrospective birth cohort including children with asthma in Saskatchewan, Canada, researchers determined the factors predictive of asthma remission with an emphasis on age of asthma onset. Children who received a diagnosis of asthma in the first 6 years of life and who underwent at least 10 years of follow‐up post-diagnosis (n = 22,563) were identified from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health databases. Of these, 6,393 children who had persistent asthma [≥ 1 physician visit or hospitalization for asthma during each year of follow‐up] and those who experienced remission were included. The rate of asthma remission was estimated to be 37 per 100 person‐years. Factors that were identified to be positively related to remission were: early‐onset asthma, being female, residing in a rural and medium urban location. A reduced probability of remission was observed in relation to history of atopy. Overall, findings revealed remission occurrence in most children with asthma, this was evident particularly in those who had symptom onset within the first 3 years of life.
