The contribution of injection drug use to hepatitis C virus transmission globally, regionally, and at country level: A modelling study
The Lancet: Gastroenterology & Hepatology Apr 17, 2019
Trickey A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers estimated the global, regional, and country-level contribution of injection drug use to the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemics. To simulate country-level HCV epidemics among people who inject drugs and the general population, a dynamic deterministic HCV transmission model was developed. The model consisted of 88 countries. According to results, the model predicted that 0.23% of the global population in 2017 were injection drug users, and 8% of prevalent HCV infections were among people currently injecting drugs. Unsafe injection practices among people who inject drugs make a significant contribution to the global incident of HCV infections. Any intervention capable of reducing transmission of HCV among people who inject drugs will have a marked effect on the incidence of HCV at the country level.
