The contribution of ascitic fluid to body weight in patients with liver cirrhosis, and its estimation using girth: A cross-sectional observational study

Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Dec 07, 2019

Lamarti E, et al. - Given that weight and BMI are used in standard nutritional screening tools for recognizing malnutrition risk, despite that these are difficult to measure for those with ascites, often secondary to liver cirrhosis and dietetic guidance suggest adjusting for ascitic weight by 2.2–14 kg, researchers conducted this study with the aim to determine the contribution of ascitic fluid to body weight in patients with liver cirrhosis and compare this with the current guidance. In addition, they assessed if ascitic weight could be assessed using girth circumference. In this cross-sectional, observational study conducted over 13 weeks, participants were 18 patients who underwent paracentesis. The patients were weighed, their girths were measured, and BMI was calculated pre- and post-paracentesis. Outcomes revealed weight difference greater than 14 kg in 11% (n = 2) of participants, suggesting the necessity for the reevaluation of current dietetic guidance. Measuring girth preparacentesis may support informing dry weight estimation.
