The comparison of clinical outcome of fresh type II odontoid fracture treatment between anterior cannulated screws fixation and posterior instrumentation of C1-2 without fusion: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Jan 12, 2018
Yuan S, et al. - Researchers assessed the clinical outcome of anterior cannulated screws fixation (ACSF) vs posterior instrumentation of C1-2 without fusion (PIWF) for fresh type II odontoid fracture. They found that both the procedures could afford high rate of fracture union. Anterior screw fixation appeared the best option for most fresh type II odontoid fractures, due to its simplicity and preservation of normal atlanto-axial rotary function. They also noted that posterior instrumentation without fusion could preserve most of the atlanto-axial rotary function and resulted in moderate neck discomfort and was also a good alternative if anterior screw fixation was contraindicated.
