The comorbidity burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus: Patterns, clusters and predictions from a large English primary care cohort
BMC Medicine Aug 01, 2019
Nowakowska M, Zghebi SS, Ashcroft DM, et al. - Via performing a large primary care cohort study, researchers quantified comorbidity patterns in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), determined the prevalence of six chronic conditions in 2027, and identified clusters of similar conditions. At the time of diagnosis, more people living in the most deprived areas had ≥ 1 comorbidities present vs the most affluent areas. Depression prevalence rose in all strata and was more prevalent in the most deprived areas. Depression was prognosticated to affect 33% and 15% of females and males, respectively, with T2D in 2027. With concordant conditions arranged together and some changes among groups of various demographics, moderate clustering tendencies were noted. Therefore, comorbidities were prevalent in this population, and high between-patient variability in comorbidity patterns emphasized the requirement for patient-centered healthcare. Mental health was concluded as a growing concern, and the researchers suggested the necessity for interventions that could target both physical and mental health in this population.
