The clinical significance of osteophytes in compartments of the knee joint with normal articular cartilage
American Journal of Roentgenology Mar 13, 2018
Markhardt BK, et al. - Experts intended to evaluate if marginal osteophytes in compartments with normal cartilage would be more frequently observed in knees with cartilage lesions and osteophytes in other compartments, through knee MRI examinations. Data displayed that marginal osteophytes were noted in compartments with normal cartilage on MRI and arthroscopy in 60.5% of knees (75 of 124) with cartilage lesions and osteophytes in other compartments and were responsible for all false-positive grade 2 and grade 3 osteophytes. The inference drawn was that compartments with marginal osteophytes and normal cartilage were a common finding in knees that had other compartments with osteophytes and cartilage lesions.
