The clinical characteristic and prognostic factors of leptomeningeal metastasis in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer: A retrospective study from one single cancer institute
Cancer Medicine Apr 20, 2019
Yan W, et al. - Via this retrospective analysis, researchers studied clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of 136 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients (58 men, 78 women; median age was 55 years) with leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) at the Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute between July 2014 and March 2018. They found EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) mutations and ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) rearrangement was present in 51 patients and 6 patients, respectively. The reported median progression-free survival and median overall survival (OSLM) was 3.9 months and 9.8 months, respectively. In a multivariate analysis, the identified independent favourable predictors of survival were KPS (Karnofsky performance status) ≥ 80 and EGFR-TKIs (tyrosine kinase inhibitors) following LM diagnosis, whereas poor survival was independently predicted by smoking. In NSCLC patients with LM, better clinical outcomes could be seen in relation to KPS ≥ 80 at the diagnosis of LM, non-smokers, and administration of EGFR-TKIs.
