The clinical and radiographic course of early knee and hip osteoarthritis over 10 years in CHECK (Cohort Hip and Cohort Knee)
Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Jun 20, 2019
Schiphof D, et al. - In CHECK (Cohort Hip and Cohort Knee)—a multicenter, prospective observational cohort study involving 1,002 subjects with first complaints in the knee(s) and/or hip(s) suspected of early osteoarthritis (OA)—researchers described OA’s radiographic and symptomatic course. Patients completed questionnaires, physical exams, and x-rays at baseline and at 2-, 5-, 8-, and 10-year follow-up visits. Clinical OA was considered to be a Kellgren and Lawrence score of two or more. Knee pain, hip pain, and both knee and hip pain were reported by 83%, 59%, and 42% of subjects, respectively. Although individual scores varied, the symptomatic course in subjects with hip or knee complaints suspected of OA remained fairly stable on population level. Particularly in subjects with both hip and knee OA, most joint replacements took place in subjects who had multiple affected joints and progressive radiological courses.
