The characteristics and risk factors of hepatocellular carcinoma in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease without cirrhosis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 01, 2019
Tobari M, Hashimoto E, Taniai M, et al. - Researchers sought to examine the characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients who had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) without cirrhosis via assessing NAFLD patients from their own University hospital. They assessed 48 NAFLD patients with non-cirrhotic HCC and 71 NAFLD patients with cirrhotic HCC. As per the analysis, male gender, alcohol consumption, and the FIB4-index were important risk factors for HCC among patients with non-cirrhotic NAFLD. Only the tumor stage was identified to influence HCC recurrence and survival. They recommend clinicians to be aware of alcohol consumption as a modifiable risk factor for HCC.
