The changing characteristics of arthroplasty patients: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 04, 2021
Ekhtiari S, Sefton A, Wood TJ, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate how this patient population has changed between 2003 and 2017. Between 2003 and 2017, researchers performed a retrospective review of a prospective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) database including a total of 17,138 TJAs. Individuals undergoing TJA are becoming younger and more obese in this retrospective analysis of a large prospective database. They did not find if patients are becoming more medically complex. The outcomes demonstrate that these trends paint a concerning picture of a population that is increasingly complex and may require a greater allocation of resources in the future.
