The changing burden of long-term health outcomes in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: A retrospective analysis of the St Jude Lifetime Cohort Study
The Lancet Haematology May 15, 2019
Mulrooney DA, et al. - Among survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia treated over time, researchers focused on the extent of morbidity and trends of late health outcomes by using data from The St Jude Lifetime Cohort. This study included 980 survivors diagnosed with paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia as well as 272 community control participants for comparison. Despite observed improvements in overall survival due to changed paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia treatment protocols, these patients continued to experience a high burden of late morbidity. Over time, a marked shift has been noted in the pattern of late toxic effects. The occurrence of health conditions that are immediately life-threatening has attenuated in survivors, however, continued medical surveillance, counselling, and lifestyle modifications are needed to maintain health status and quality of life for survivors of paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
