The blood metabolome of incident kidney cancer: A case–control study nested within the MetKid consortium
PLoS Medicine Oct 08, 2021
Guida F, Tan VY, Corbin LJ, et al. - Findings indicate that blood metabolome has a potentially vital role in kidney cancer etiology.
This study involved 1,305 kidney cancer cases and 1,305 healthy controls.
Experts examined the link between kidney cancer and the levels of 1,416 metabolites measured in blood on average 8 years prior to the disease onset.
A total of 25 metabolites were identified to be robustly linked with kidney cancer risk.
Specifically, there was an inverse association of multiple glycerophospholipids with the risk, while several amino acids were positively related to risk.
On accounting for body mass index (BMI), it was found that some—but not all—metabolites related to kidney cancer risk were impacted by BMI.
