The benefits of enhanced recovery after surgery for gastric cancer: A large before-and-after propensity score matching study
Clinical Nutrition Oct 07, 2020
Jeong O, Jang A, Jung MR, et al. - In patients who underwent gastrectomy, researchers investigated the benefits of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in the clinical setting by evaluating short-term surgical outcomes before and after the implementation of ERAS. From their gastric cancer database, they identified patients who underwent gastrectomy before implementation of ERAS (2008-2009) and after implementation of the final version of ERAS (2016-2018). In the clinical setting of gastrectomy, the ERAS group had significantly lower intra-abdominal bleeding (0% vs 4.1%) and intra-abdominal abscess (0% vs 2.7%), but significantly higher postoperative ileus (8.6% vs 0.5%). ERAS resulted in a 3-day reduction in hospital stay without increased readmission after gastrectomy. Overall findings validated the advantages of ERAS in the clinical setting of gastrectomy.
