The associations between adiposity, cognitive function, and achievement in children

Raine L, et al. - Researchers assessed the relation of adiposity, particularly visceral adipose tissue, on achievement and cognitive function among children. Participants were children with obesity, aged 7-9 years old, completed cognitive and academic tests. They matched normal weight children to this group on demographic characteristics and aerobic fitness. Among children with obesity, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was selectively and negatively associated with cognition. They suggested that its detrimental relationship with obese children’s intellectual and cognitive functioning was concerning along with the dangerous metabolic nature of VAT.
