The association of vestibular schwannoma volume with facial nerve outcomes after surgical resection
The Laryngoscope Mar 19, 2021
Killeen DE, Barnett SL, Mickey BE, et al. - In this single institutional retrospective chart review, researchers explored the connection between tumor size and facial nerve outcomes following vestibular schwannoma (VS) resection. The sample consisted of all adult patients with untreated sporadic VS who had surgical resection from 2008 to 2018 with preoperative MRI and 1 year of follow‐up. There were 167 patients who underwent VS resection, 54.5% of whom were female and had a median age of 49 years (20–76 years). Surgical resection was conducted by translabyrinthine, middle cranial fossa, retrosigmoid, and transpromontorial approaches. Findings suggested an association of tumor volume > 3 cm 3 with worse facial nerve outcomes 12 months following surgical resection.
