The association of prenatal risk factors with childhood asthma
Journal of Asthma Sep 11, 2019
Arif AA, et al. - Via univariable and multiple stepwise logistic regression analysis, researchers examined the link of maternal complications during pregnancy and prenatal exposures with childhood asthma among low-income families in Karachi, Pakistan. Significantly increased odds of childhood asthma were reported in correlation with maternal symptoms of nocturnal cough and wheezing during pregnancy. Higher odds were also noted in relation to a family history of asthma or hay fever. Significantly increased odds of childhood asthma were reported in correlation with receiving prenatal care by Dai, an unskilled health worker. Prenatal exposure to rats/mice and contact with goats while pregnant was significantly related to childhood asthma. A decrease was noted in the odds of childhood asthma in correlation with prenatal exposure to cows/cattle. Most of the crucial maternal and prenatal risk factors for childhood asthma identified in this study are avoidable. There is a necessity for suitable actions to create awareness regarding the prenatal risk factors in this population.
