The association of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Oct 30, 2020
Asfari MM, Talal Sarmini M, Alomari M, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross-sectional analysis incorporating a large national database (the 2012 National Inpatient Sample) to examine the link between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This study involved 218,950 patients with NASH (study group) as well as 30,493,574 patients without NASH (control group). Findings revealed a 60% higher likelihood of HCC developing in NASH patients vs in those without NASH, even after adjusting for age, gender, smoking, alcohol use, obesity, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, hemochromatosis, HIV, cirrhosis and the modified comorbidity index. There might be a requirement for close monitoring and even periodical surveillance.
