The association of metabolic health obesity with incidence of carotid artery plaque in Chinese adults
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 28, 2021
Shen P, Zhou Y, Song A, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort study to assess the link between different obese phenotypes with carotid artery plaque (CAP) event. Participants were 32,778 Chinese adults (19,221 males and 13,557 females, aged 41.9±11.0 years). Depending on baseline body mass index (BMI < 24.0 vs ≥ 24.0 kg/m 2 ) and metabolic features (health vs unhealth), the evaluation of obese phenotypes was done. Further categorization of participants into four groups was accomplished: metabolic health and normal weight (MHNW), metabolic unhealth and normal weight (MUHNW), metabolic health and overweight (MHO), metabolic unhealth and overweight (MUHO). Relative to the MHNW group, the hazard ratios for the risk of incident CAP were 2.44, 1.52, and 1.8 for the MUHNW group, MHO group, and for the MUHO group, respectively. The link was more prominent in young adults (< 65 y) vs that in aged adults (≥ 65 y). Findings revealed MUHNW, MHO, and MUHO were related to CAP risk.
