The association of kidney function and albuminuria with the risk and outcomes of syncope: A population-based cohort study
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Sep 03, 2018
Massicotte-Azarniouch D, et al. - In this population-based retrospective cohort study, researchers investigated the risks and ensuing outcomes of syncope among 272,146 seniors (≥ 66 years old) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Ontario, Canada from April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2016. They used administrative healthcare databases to study the relationship of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) with incident syncope. Also, adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the association of incident syncope with the composite outcome of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death by levels of eGFR/ACR. Findings demonstrated a higher risk for syncope and related complications in relation to a lower eGFR and higher ACR among individuals of an advanced age.
