The association of insomnia and depressive symptoms with all-cause mortality among middle-aged and old adults
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Jun 28, 2018
Leggett AN, et al. - Considering the common occurrence of insomnia and depressive symptoms among adults the independent association of these symptoms with mortality (though not all findings agree), researchers investigated if insomnia symptoms explain risk of death independent of depressive symptoms. Among other health and demographic covariates, they examined insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms as prognosticators of all-cause mortality. Both insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms were noted to be correlated with a greater risk of death, though compared to health and demographic characteristics, their effects were relatively small. When both were considered in the model, depressive symptoms accounted for the insomnia association. In old adults with depressive symptoms, a lower mortality risk was noted with depression screening and providing validated treatments.
