Tanenbaum JE, et al. - This study was implemented to gain insight into the potential pitfalls and risks associated with lumbar fusion surgery in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Though rare, IBD as a comorbidity among lumbar fusion patients is becoming increasingly more common. Notably, no increased risk of postoperative complications was reported in IBD patients. Findings recommended spine surgeons to be ready to treat more IBD patients and to incorporate the present findings into preoperative risk counseling and patient selection.
