The association of angiopoietin-like peptide 4 levels with obesity and hepatosteatosis in adolescents

Cytokine Oct 08, 2019

Dikker O, et al. - Among volunteer adolescents (n = 85; 55 were obese and 30 were normal weight), researchers examined the link between serum angiopoietin-like peptide 4 (ANGPTL-4) levels and obesity and hepatosteatosis. Using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay, they measured serum ANGPTL-4 levels of participants. They found significantly higher BMI, ANGPTL-4, HbA1c, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, homeostatic model of assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and insulin levels in the obese adolescent group vs healthy control group. Among obese adolescents with or without hepatosteatosis, BMI, ANGPTL-4, triglyceride, insulin and HOMA-IR levels did not differ statistically significantly. A rise in ANGPTL-4 levels was evident in obesity in adolescents. However, it was difficult to establish a link between hepatosteatosis and ANGPTL-4. The possible benefit of targeting ANGPTL-4 was suggested for the pathogenesis and related complications of obesity.
