The association of angiogenesis markers with acute kidney injury and mortality after cardiac surgery
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Apr 11, 2019
Mansour SG, et al. - Using a prospective cohort (TRIBE-AKI: Translational Research Investigating Biomarker Endpoints for Acute Kidney Injury) including 1,444 adults undergoing cardiac surgery, researchers examined the association of angiogenesis markers with acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality post-cardiac surgery. Both pre- and postoperatively within 6 hours following the operation, they measured plasma levels of 2 proangiogenic markers (vascular endothelial growth factor A [VEGF] and placental growth factor [PGF]) and 1 antiangiogenic marker (soluble VEGF receptor 1 [VEGFR1]). They used multivariable logistic regression. Lower AKI and mortality risk were observed in relation to higher levels of postoperative proangiogenic markers, VEGF and PGF. In addition, higher risk for AKI and mortality were observed in relation to higher postoperative antiangiogenic VEGFR1 levels.
