The association between Zika virus infection and microcephaly in Brazil 2015–2017: An observational analysis of over 4 million births
PLoS Medicine Apr 05, 2019
Brady OJ, et al. - In this study, authors estimated the data to evaluate the correlation between Zika virus infection and microcephaly in Northeast Brazil. They observed no data for alternative non-Zika causes of the microcephaly outbreak. They also found no impact of concurrent dengue infection or prior yellow fever vaccination on microcephaly risk. They noticed 17 times higher prevalence of bearing children with microcephaly among females infected with Zika virus early in pregnancy. They also reported the highest microcephaly risk in women with Zika infection in the first 2 trimesters. Such women were also at higher risk of developing other non-microcephaly birth defects.
