The association between the Nutrition-Related Index and morbidity following head and neck microsurgery
The Laryngoscope Jan 29, 2020
Parhar HS, et al. - Researchers conducted this nationwide analysis to explore the connection between the Nutrition-Related Index, calculated as follows: NRI = (1.519 × serum albumin) + [41.7 × (mass/ideal body weight)], and morbidity following head and neck microsurgery. Two hundred seventy-six were malnourished among 977 identified individuals. Findings suggested that malnourished patients had higher comorbidity rates, were more inclined to actively smoke and were more prone to have primaries in the oropharynx or hypopharynx/larynx. Data reported that 28.2% of individuals undergoing surgery for head and neck cancers with free flap reconstruction were malnourished. Malnourishment has been found to be independently linked to postoperative pulmonary complications, bleeding or transfusion requirements, and 30-day mortality.
