The association between secondhand smoke and childhood asthma: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Pediatric Pulmonology Jul 20, 2020
He Z, Wu H, Zhang S, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta‐analysis to examine the role of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure as a risk factor of asthma among children. From June 1975 to March 10, 2020, they conducted a systematic review in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Of the 26,970 studies identified, 93 eligible studies (42 cross‐sectional, 41 cohort, and 10 case‐control) were included in the meta‐analysis. Using Egger's and Begg's tests, there was no evidence of significant publication or small study bias. A positive association was found between prenatal and postnatal secondhand smoking exposure and the occurrence of childhood asthma, asthma‐like syndrome, and wheezing. Such findings support continued initiatives to minimize exposure to second-hand smoke in children.
