The association between primary ovarian insufficiency and osteoporosis in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging
Menopause Jun 12, 2021
Shea AK, Buwembo A, Mayhew A, et al. - Using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, researchers herein examined the relationship of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and early menopause on bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis in a large cohort of females residing in Canada. At the time of baseline evaluation, the mean age of women was 65 years (N = 12,339). Post-adjustment, POI was identified to elevate the odds of osteoporosis, as diagnosed using BMD. This link was impacted by current cigarette smoking. Obesity and current hormone therapy use were protective factors, but not the duration of hormone therapy use. Findings of this study corroborate results from smaller cohorts illustrating an association between POI and osteoporosis.
