The association between premorbid beta blocker exposure and mortality in sepsis: A systematic review
Critical Care Sep 13, 2019
Tan K, et al. - Researchers analyzed all studies of premorbid β-blocker and sepsis identified from EMBase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane databases in order to determine the link between premorbid β-blocker exposure and mortality in sepsis. Data were extracted from investigations describing chronic β-blocker use before sepsis and mortality. This analysis included a total of 9 studies with 56,414 patients with sepsis, including 6576 patients with premorbid exposure to β-blockers. The evidence gained in this study revealed reduced mortality in correlation with β-blocker exposure prior to sepsis. A bona fide meta-analysis could not be performed due to insufficient data. It is not clear if the apparent decrease in mortality may be attributed to the mitigation of catecholamine excess.
