The association between pesticide use and cutaneous melanoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Nov 06, 2019
Stanganelli I, De Felici MB, Mandel VD, et al. - Using MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science, researchers conducted a systematic review of the literature up to September 2018 to explore the connection between exposure to pesticides and cutaneous melanoma (CM), the deadliest form of skin cancer, as well as to identify the categories of pesticides mainly involved in development of CM. In total, nine studies involving 184,389 unique individuals were included. According to results, the summary relative risks for the categories ‘herbicides – ever exposure’, ‘insecticides – ever exposure’, ‘any pesticide – ever exposure’ and ‘any pesticide – high exposure’ resulted in 1.85, 1.57, 1.31 and 2.17, respectively. Findings revealed that there is an increased risk of CM among people exposed to herbicides. This result needs to be confirmed by future properly designed observational studies. No indication for publication bias has been found.
