The association between oral health status and respiratory pathogen colonization with pneumonia risk in institutionalized adults

Hong CHL, et al. - Researchers evaluated the oral health and the prevalence of pre-existing oral colonization with respiratory pathogens among dependent elderly, and whether these factors influenced pneumonia development. Risk factors for pneumonia development were the calculus amount and tongue colonization with respiratory pathogens. In order to remove tongue biofilm and calculus, oral hygiene measures could reduce pneumonia development.
