The association between non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (with or without metabolic syndrome) and extrahepatic cancer development
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Dec 17, 2020
Yamamoto K, Ikeya T, Okuyama S, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective longitudinal study to ascertain if a risk for cancer development is conferred by non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Individuals who received a diagnosis of NAFLD were compared with those who did not for cancer development tendencies. They analyzed data from 30,172 participants who underwent health checkups between 2005 and 2019, 4,394 (14.6%) of whom had NAFLD. A higher incidence of digestive organ cancers, particularly in the stomach and small intestine, was reported in participants with NAFLD vs those without. Significantly lower rates of neoplasms in respiratory and intrathoracic organs and male genital organs were observed in patients with NAFLD and MetS vs individuals without NAFLD. Overall, experts concluded a link of NAFLD with the development of gastrointestinal cancers, while MetS was identified as a negative risk factor for lung and prostate cancer.
