The association between maternal body mass index and child obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Medicine Jul 10, 2019
Heslehurst N, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers analyzed the dose-response association between maternal body mass index (BMI) and childhood obesity in the offspring. This systematic review involved 79 studies from international settings that examined maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and childhood weight status. For child overweight/obesity and for child overweight with maternal obesity, significantly increased odds were noted. In this finding of 264% increased child obesity odds when mothers have obesity from pre-pregnancy suggests that it would be beneficial to start the prevention of obesity before conception. This research offers significant proof to help females of childbearing age with weight management to stop intergenerational obesity by developing interventions that begin before conception.
