The association between maternal body mass index and child obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 14, 2019
Heslehurst N, et al. - Via this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated the dose–response association between maternal body mass index and childhood obesity in the offspring. Searching MEDLINE, Child Development & Adolescent Studies, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycInfo, they identified 41,301 relevant studies; Of these, 79 met the inclusion criteria (n = 59 cohorts). The meta-analysis suggested a significant association of maternal pre-pregnancy obesity with child obesity, child overweight/obesity combined, and child overweight. They noted increasing odds of child obesity with increasing child age. These findings emphasize the benefits of commencing obesity prevention interventions prior to conception.
