The association between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in older adults: Results from the National Institutes of Health Pooled Cohorts
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 19, 2019
Nanna MG, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers analyzed data from the National Institutes of Health Pooled Cohorts to determine the strength of the link between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD; stroke, myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular death) among older adults, given that higher LDL-C in early adulthood is associated with increased risk of ASCVD. Participants (n = 2,667; 59% female; median age: 78 years) were free of ASCVD. Findings revealed no link between LDL-C and CVD risk, even in the presence of other risk factors, in this well-characterized cohort of adults aged 75 years or older.
