The association between longitudinal strain at rest and stress and outcome in asymptomatic patients with moderate and severe aortic stenosis

Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography Mar 30, 2019

Levy-Neuman S, et al. - In this investigation, researchers identified the incremental value of global longitudinal strain (GLS) and basal longitudinal strain (BLS) in rest and during exercise on the outcomes of moderate and severe aortic stenosis (AS) among asymptomatic patients. For this analysis, they retrospectively enrolled 75 patients with isolated, asymptomatic AS and preserved left ventricular function and had symptom-limited exercise echocardiography. GLS and BLS during rest and exercise were evaluated among other clinical and echocardiographic data. In patients with asymptomatic AS, investigators found that reduced exercise BLS, regardless of clinical factors and conventional echocardiographic parameters, was related to future cardiovascular events. They suggested that detection of postexercise myocardial dysfunction in asymptomatic AS patients with preserved left ventricular function can help in risk assessment of these patients.
