The association between kidney disease and diabetes remission in bariatric surgery patients with type 2 diabetes
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Jul 26, 2019
Friedman AN, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers assessed how bariatric surgery, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated. They investigated 737 bariatric surgery patients with type 2 diabetes to determine the impact of bariatric surgery-induced remission of type 2 diabetes on markers of kidney disease, if CKD is related to remission of diabetes post-bariatric surgery and if these links could be modified by baseline levels of gut hormones and peptides. Findings revealed type 2 diabetes remission 5 years post-bariatric surgery correlated with improvements in albuminuria and stabilized prognostic risk for CKD, but not estimated glomerular filtration rate. A lower probability of diabetes remission was observed in relation to lower kidney function and greater prognostic risk at the time of bariatric surgery. The mechanisms by which long-term progression of CKD in type 2 diabetes may be delayed by bariatric surgery require further study.
