The association between high-volume intraoperative fluid administration and outcomes among pediatric patients undergoing large bowel resection
Paediatric Anaesthesia Feb 07, 2019
Sanford ES, et al. - A database of perioperative practice and postoperative outcomes was assessed for colectomy encounters between July 2012 and March 2017, to examine the relationship between high-volume intraoperative fluid administration and consequences among pediatric cases undergoing large bowel resection. Researchers found a relation between high-volume fluid administration and length of stay >6 days, time to first meal >4 days as well as supplemental oxygen requirement >24 hours after adjusting for ASA status, blood loss, transfusion, and open surgery. They concluded high-volume fluid administration during colectomy correlated with worse postoperative outcomes indicative of impaired recovery.
