The association between glaucoma and risk of depression: A nationwide population-based cohort study
BMC Ophthalmology Jun 27, 2018
Chen YY, et al. - From January 1, 2001, through December 31, 2011, a population-based retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database was conducted to examine the relationship between glaucoma and the subsequent risk of developing depression as well as evaluated risk factors associated with depression in glaucoma patients. It was observed that patients with glaucoma were at significantly greater risk of developing depression. Significant risk factors for depression among glaucoma patients were age, female, low income, substance abuse, and living alone. However, the use of β-blocker eye drops and the number of glaucoma medications were not significant risk factors for depression.
