The association between chronic kidney disease and tuberculosis: A comparative cohort study in England
BMC Nephrology Oct 07, 2020
Ruzangi J, Iwagami M, Smeeth L, et al. - In this study, researchers examined whether and how chronic kidney disease (CKD) (prior to renal replacement therapy) is related to incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in UK General Practice. They selected 242,349 patients with CKD (stages 3-5) (estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 for ≥ 3 months) using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, and these were individually matched to a control from the general population without known CKD. According to the findings, an increased risk of TB diagnosis in relation to CKD was reported in a UK General Practice cohort. Consideration should be given to this group of patients for testing as well as treating for latent TB.
