The association between cement viscosity and revision risk after primary total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 20, 2021
Wyatt RWB, Chang RN, Royse KE, et al. - This study was carried out to evaluate revision risk after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with high-viscosity cement (HVC) compared with medium-viscosity cement (MVC) in a large cohort. A cohort study was performed using data from Kaiser Permanente’s Total Joint Replacement Registry. Researchers distinguished patients who had undergone fully cemented primary TKA for osteoarthritis (2001-2018). Using MVC, the final cohort comprised 76,052 TKAs, 41.1%. There was no difference in revision for aseptic loosening specifically, while a lower risk for any revision with the use of Simplex MVC compared with Palacos HVC was observed. Given the widespread use of HVC, future study is required to evaluate other HVC and potential mechanisms for failure outside of loosening.
