The association between benzodiazepines and survival in patients with cancer: A systematic review
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Feb 01, 2019
O’Donnell SB, et al. - In view of the value of benzodiazepines for managing symptoms like anxiety or dyspnea, often experienced by patients with cancer, researchers investigated the impact of these drugs on survival by evaluating studies examining benzodiazepine use and survival in adults with cancer. They identified 2,257 unique records; 18 met inclusion criteria with 4,117 patients represented. Outcomes show that benzodiazepine use in patients with cancer is not related to decreased survival. The association between benzodiazepine use and survival in earlier stages of cancer was not evaluated in any of the studies. Furthermore, the quality of studies retrieved signifies a necessity for further robust studies to draw more definitive conclusions.
