Metsala J, et al. - A large, nationwide case-cohort study was performed to investigate the association between asthma and type 1 diabetes among Finnish children, using a novel statistical approach. An increased risk of subsequent type 1 diabetes was observed in children with asthma, however, children with type 1 diabetes had a decreased risk of subsequent asthma. Further studies in different populations and on potential biological mechanisms were warranted before any clinical implications could be drawn from these findings.
