The association between apathy and frailty in older adults: A new investigation using data from the MAPT study
Aging and Mental Health Aug 22, 2019
Parrotta I, Maltais M, Rolland Y, et al. - Using original data from dementia-free, community-dwelling older adults, researchers examined the cross-sectional association between apathy (defined by three items from Geriatric Depression Scale) and frailty (according to Fried’s frailty phenotype). Despite the scarecity of data, apathy and frailty seem to potentially share physiological mechanisms and were found to be closely associated. As per the ordinal logistic regression, there seemed a two-fold more likely to be rated as frail among apathetic individuals, when adjusting for confounders. A two-fold higher likelihood to be rated as prefrail and a three-fold higher probability to be rated as frail were evident among apathetic individuals vs robust participants.
