The association between alopecia and inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Dermatology Jan 17, 2021
Maghfour J, Olson J, Conic RRZ, et al. - To determine whether and how alopecia is related to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), researchers performed this systematic review and meta-analysis using articles on co-occurring alopecia and IBD from 1967 to 2020 that were identified via PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The review was performed with 79 studies. To provide the pooled prevalence of alopecia and IBD, 19 of the studies were used to perform a one-way proportional meta-analysis. In IBD patients, the pooled prevalence of non-scarring alopecia was estimated to be 1.12%; the prevalence of IBD in scarring and non-scarring alopecia was reported to be 1.99%. Findings are suggestive of a strong association between IBD and alopecia, especially alopecia areata. Performing screening for IBD in dermatology patients with alopecia may be beneficial.
