The analgesic efficacy compared ultrasound-guided continuous transverse abdominis plane block with epidural analgesia following abdominal surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
BMC Anesthesiology Mar 06, 2020
Qin C, et al. - Researchers conducted a review and meta-analysis with the aim to determine the analgesic efficacy of continuous transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block vs epidural analgesia (EA) in adults after abdominal surgery. Searching PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register from inception to June 2019, they identified eight trials including 453 patients (TAP block:224 patients; EA: 229 patients) meeting the inclusion criteria and included seven trials in the meta-analysis. Outcomes suggest the possible noninferiority of continuous TAP block, combined with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, vs EA in providing dynamic analgesia efficacy in postoperative pain management after abdominal surgery. In addition, fewer postoperative side effects were reported in correlation with providing continuous TAP block.
