The added burden of allergen sensitization among children with severe or poorly controlled asthma
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 05, 2020
Teague WG, Iqbal A, Ding Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to analyze the effect of allergen sensitization (AS) on asthma exacerbations, healthcare use, and costs among children with severe or poorly controlled (SPC) asthma in private and public insurance settings. From the MarketScan Commercial (private insurance) and Medicaid databases, children with SPC asthma, aged 6 to 11 years, were analyzed. According to results, during follow-up, children with AS vs children without AS had significantly higher adjusted rates of asthma exacerbations, and significantly more days with oral corticosteroids use. Among children with AS, rates of asthma-related hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and healthcare costs were significantly higher than among children without AS.
