Testing the effects of gentle vibrotactile stimulation on symptom relief in fibromyalgia
Arthritis Research & Therapy Jun 20, 2019
Pujol J, et al. - Via a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, crossover clinical trial on 77 female patients with fibromyalgia, the researchers determined the effect of vibrotactile stimulation on symptom relief. In alleviating fibromyalgia symptoms globally vibrotactile stimulation was observed as significantly superior to sham. Unpleasant and somatic sensations such as generalized pain and fatigue were perceived over the benefits. Improving sleep quality, vibrotactile stimulation was well tolerated despite the fact that vibrations were administered at night. New evidence that non-nociceptive somatosensory stimulation could auspiciously act upon the altered somatosensory balance in fibromyalgia was observed. Both the degree of improvement and the easy application, from a clinical perspective, seemed to support a potential role for vibrotactile stimulation in the symptomatic treatment of fibromyalgia.
