Ten-year results of small incision lenticule extraction
Journal of Refractive Surgery Oct 22, 2019
Blum M, et al. - Researchers analyzed the effects of refractive lenticule extraction for 10 years using the technique of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) to treat myopia and myopic astigmatism. A total of 56 of 91 eyes from the original treatment group volunteered for reexamination 10 years after surgery, including uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, objective and manifest refraction, and assessment of the interface and corneal surface by slit-lamp examination. Findings revealed that there was no significant change from the 6-month results at 10 years postoperatively. Over the 10-year period, regression was −0.35 ± 0.66 diopters. For the treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism, SMILE seems to be an effective, stable, and safe procedure.
